Which is the origin of “marger” profession?
Our profession is documented since the 15th century in Majorca, but the dry stone technique goes back to
many thousands of years ago in different cultures.
The construction of terraces, here called “marjades”, appear due the need to cultivate in the mountain. There
are raised on the slopes to retain soil and prevent landslides.
Time ago the retaining walls of the terraces were constructed from stones cleared from the fields during
preparation from agriculture.
Our job is one of the most traditional and artisan of the island, and the ‘margers’ work has changed the
landscape. In recent decades the profession has developed and diversified a lot.
